Rhetoric, Education, and Migration

José Luis Cano Jr., PhD

I work with tense hope as an educator, researcher, and photographer.

Research

My research examines and amplifies the rhetorical ways in which racialized communities, especially folks at the US-Mexico border, compose themselves in educational, digital, and legal spaces.

Teaching

My teaching approach emphasizes rhetorical expression, polyvocal collaboration, and social attunement. I teach writing, Latinx rhetorics, and digital composition.

Public Writing

Through public writing, I use humanistic approaches to address issues in education, work conditions, and im/migration.

Photography

I photograph my environment to frame proximal intimacies, food cultures, and border expressions.

Curriculum Vitae

I'm an assistant professor of rhetoric, composition, and literacy studies at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

About Me

I grew up at the Brownsville-Matamoros border, so I use the border geography as a way to understand global forces.
